Creator safety and privacy: how to protect your identity, your location and your content

A practical privacy checklist for online creators: stage names, separate accounts, hiding your location in photos, protecting against doxxing and leaks, and what a platform should do for you.

Being a creator means being visible. But visible doesn't have to mean exposed. With a few habits, you can share a lot of yourself online while keeping your real name, your address and your private life separate.

This guide is a practical checklist. You don't need to do everything at once – start with the first section and work your way down.

1. Separate your creator identity from your private one

The strongest protection is separation. If nothing links your creator persona to your legal identity, there's much less to leak.

  • Use a stage name everywhere: on socials, on your fan platform, in your link-in-bio.
  • Create a dedicated email address just for creator work. Don't reuse the one with your real name in it.
  • Use a separate phone number for creator accounts if you can – an eSIM or second SIM is enough.
  • Keep separate browser profiles for creator and private accounts, so you never post from the wrong one.
  • Don't follow your private contacts from your creator accounts, and vice versa. "People you may know" features can connect the two.

2. Don't give away your location

Most doxxing doesn't come from hacking. It comes from details in photos.

  • Strip metadata. Photos can contain GPS coordinates and device information (EXIF data). Many phones let you turn off location for the camera; do it, and double-check before uploading.
  • Watch your windows. A distinctive building, street sign or view can be enough to find your neighbourhood.
  • Watch your mail. Parcels, letters and delivery boxes with labels are a classic giveaway.
  • Post with a delay. Sharing a café or event after you've left is much safer than sharing it live.
  • Vary your background. If every video is shot in the same recognisable room, that room becomes a fingerprint.

Geo-blocking: hide your profile where you live

Many creators don't want neighbours, colleagues or family to find them. Geo-blocking lets you hide your profile from viewers in a certain area. On SHEDANX, geo-blocking is on our roadmap: you'll be able to hide your profile within a radius around your home or in entire countries. Until it's live, the separation habits above are your best protection.

3. Lock down your accounts

  • Use a password manager and a unique password for every account.
  • Turn on two-factor authentication everywhere, ideally with an authenticator app instead of SMS.
  • Check your logged-in devices every few months and remove anything you don't recognise.
  • Be suspicious of "support" messages. Platforms don't DM you asking for your password or a login code.

4. Protect your content from leaks

No platform can make leaks impossible – anyone can point a second phone at a screen. But you can make them harder and less damaging.

  • Choose a platform that protects paid media. On SHEDANX, chat media is never stored in a public folder. It's only delivered through signed, per-viewer links that expire after a few hours, and only to fans who've received or paid for it.
  • Know who has what. SHEDANX's media vault shows exactly which fans received and unlocked each file – useful if you ever need to trace a leak.
  • Watermark selectively. A subtle handle watermark makes reposts traceable and doubles as advertising.
  • Use takedown notices. If your content shows up on another site, you can send a copyright (DMCA) takedown request. Keep your originals and upload dates as proof.

5. Set boundaries with fans – and keep them

Your safety isn't only technical. Decide in advance what you will and won't share, and stick to it.

  • Never share your real name, home city district or workplace in chat, even with long-time fans.
  • Don't meet fans offline through your creator accounts.
  • Use the tools. Block and report anyone who pushes boundaries or makes threats. A good platform takes these reports seriously.
  • Keep everything on the platform. Payments, messages and custom requests should stay inside the platform, where there are records and rules.

6. What your platform should do for you

You can do a lot yourself, but the platform you choose matters. Questions worth asking:

Question On SHEDANX
Are creators verified? Yes – every application is reviewed by hand, and an ID and age check is required before the first payout.
Do fans need a real name? No – which protects fans, while creators are verified.
How is paid media protected? Signed, per-viewer links that expire; never a public URL.
Is personal data protected? Data is stored encrypted and handled to GDPR standards.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use my real name as a creator?

Most creators don't. A stage name, a separate email and a separate phone number make it much harder for anyone to connect your creator work to your private life.

What is doxxing and how do I prevent it?

Doxxing is when someone publishes your private information, such as your real name or address. The best prevention is separation of identities, removing location data from photos, and not showing identifiable places in your content.

What is geo-blocking for creators?

Geo-blocking hides your profile from viewers in certain locations – for example around your home or in your home country. It's on the SHEDANX roadmap with radius and country options.

Can a platform stop my content from leaking?

No platform can stop every leak, but it can make them much harder. SHEDANX only serves paid media through signed, expiring, per-viewer links and shows you exactly who received each file.
